Telegram's invisible media hoard — and the one setting that tames it

Updated September 2026 · 6 min read

Telegram is an excellent messaging app with one of the best features for managing storage — built-in cache controls that let you set exact limits. But most people never find these settings, so Telegram quietly downloads and caches every photo, video, GIF, and voice message from every chat you open. On an active account with lots of channels, that can mean 10, 20, or even 30+ GB of cached media.

The good news: Telegram makes clearing and limiting its cache easier than almost any other app on Mac.

Where Telegram stores its cache

Telegram on Mac stores cached media in its application container. You don't need to dig through Finder to find it — Telegram shows you exactly how much space it's using, broken down by media type, right in its settings. But if you're curious, the files live under:

~/Library/Group Containers/ in a Telegram-specific subfolder.

The cache includes everything you've viewed in chats and channels: photos, videos, files, music, voice and video messages, GIFs, and stickers.

How to clear Telegram cache on Mac

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Go to Settings (gear icon) → Data and Storage → Storage Usage.
  3. Telegram shows a breakdown: how much space is used by photos, videos, files, music, and other media.
  4. Click Clear Entire Cache to wipe everything, or click individual categories to clear them selectively.

That's it. No Finder spelunking, no Terminal commands. Telegram rebuilds its cache as you browse — media in your chats will re-download when you open them, and your messages, contacts, and chat history are untouched (they live on Telegram's servers).

Unlike WhatsApp, clearing Telegram's cache on Mac does not delete your messages or media from other devices. Telegram stores everything in the cloud. You're only removing the local copies — they'll re-download if you open them again.

Set a cache size limit (the real fix)

This is the feature most people miss, and it's the single best thing you can do:

  1. In Telegram, go to Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage.
  2. Set Maximum Cache Size — you can choose anywhere from 5 GB to unlimited.
  3. Set Keep Media — how long cached files should be kept before auto-deletion. Options include 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, or forever.

A good starting point for most people: 5 GB maximum cache, keep media for 1 month. This lets Telegram work smoothly — recently viewed media stays cached for fast access — while automatically cleaning older files you're unlikely to view again.

What the cache limit actually does

When you set a limit, Telegram automatically purges the oldest cached media when the total size exceeds your threshold. It's genuinely set-and-forget: once configured, you'll never need to manually clear the cache again.

The limit applies only to cached (automatically downloaded) media. Files you've explicitly saved to your Mac aren't affected.

When not to clear cache: if you frequently access large files in Telegram (documents, videos) and have a slow internet connection, clearing the cache means you'll need to re-download them. On a fast connection, this is barely noticeable — on a slow one, it can be frustrating.

Telegram vs. other messengers on disk space

Telegram's cloud-first architecture is actually a strength for storage management. Unlike some messengers that sync media permanently to your device, Telegram treats local files as a cache — they can be re-downloaded anytime. This means you can safely clear everything and lose nothing.

The trade-off is that Telegram's "download everything you view" approach can use more space initially. But with the cache limit set, it's one of the most storage-friendly messaging apps on Mac.

FAQ

Will clearing Telegram cache delete my messages?

No. Telegram stores your messages and media in the cloud. Clearing the cache only removes local copies from your Mac. Your messages, chat history, and all media remain accessible — they'll simply re-download when you open them.

How much space does Telegram use on Mac?

The app is around 100 MB. The cache, however, depends entirely on your usage — light users might see 1–3 GB, while heavy channel subscribers can accumulate 10–30 GB or more. The built-in cache limit is the best way to keep it manageable.

Does clearing Telegram cache on Mac affect my phone?

No. Each device manages its own cache independently. Clearing the cache on your Mac has no effect on your phone's Telegram storage, and vice versa.
